MADISON, MAINE: OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF LIFE

Football game at Madison, Maine High School

Recreation

Founded in 1804, Madison sits on the shores of the Kennebec River in the foothills of Maine's Western mountains. River rafting is experiencing resurgence among adventure seekers with its calm flows and class IV and V rapids through scenic gorges. Alpine and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers will enjoy some of the best slopes in the east at nearby Sugarloaf Sunday River and Saddleback resorts. These locations also boast world-class golf courses, mountain biking and hiking trails. Several state parks and the Appalachian Trail are also short trips from Madison.

The town is home to Lake Wesserunsett, a perfect location for boating, fishing and swimming in summer and ice fishing in the winter. Lakewood Theater brings top-quality drama to the lake's shores in summer and the renowned Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture is also located alongside the lake.

The town also supports a number of sports activities and leagues for youths including football, baseball and soccer. Organized team sports are also incorporated through the school system.

Downtown Convenience

Unlike sprawling suburbs, Madison's central business district has shops for groceries, hardware, eateries, salons, movies, library - and all within a walkable distance with plentiful parking too. Efforts are underway to make improvements to the downtown district including pursuing housing grants and funds for other improvements to attract new businesses and merchant alike.

Schools

Education is serious business in Madison. We take pride in the accomplishments of our students and work to provide them with top-quality academic and extracurricular programs. We enjoy one of the highest graduation rates in the nation and 85 percent of our students continue with post-secondary schools, training or military service. We invest in new classroom and computer technologies so that our students are ready to enter the world with the knowledge and skills to operate and adapt in a rapidly changing global environment.
