Economic Development Director

The Town of Madison, Maine is seeking a dynamic and qualified professional individual to lead efforts to attract and retain business and industry to the community. Madison is a town of about 4,000 located in scenic central Maine along the banks of the Kennebec River and in the foothills of the Western mountains. The community is home to the new and expanding Backyard Farms, Madison Paper, and a number of other local businesses. The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Lakewood Theater and Golf Course are all located in the town along the shores of Lake Wesserunsett. Outstanding recreation opportunities and businesses are nearby, including Sugarloaf and Sunday River ski resorts and class IV and V rafting outfitters including Adventure Bound, North Country Rivers and Maine Whitewater.

Madison is experiencing a renaissance in its business and community enterprises and seeks an articulate, high-energy leader who can to help propel this growth in the downtown area, the 55-acre business park and surrounding neighborhoods.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum 3-5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in business, site selection/location, public administration, planning, economic development or similar field(s). The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills and be computer literate. The successful individual will be highly organized, practical, business-oriented and confident dealing with a wide range of people. Familiarity with public and private resources, such as federal and state grant programs that support development efforts, along with a proven ability to obtain such funding is preferred.

This position will be expected to identify, evaluate and pursue prospects that will lead to continued growth in business, jobs and resources for the Madison community. In addition, he/she will be the key contact with existing businesses and community members in regards to the town's development efforts. He/she will report directly to the town manager and board of selectmen and work closely with the Madison Business Gateway Committee and their sales and marketing partners.

Salary will range $40-50,000 depending upon experience and an attractive benefits package is offered including health, vacation and holidays. Occasional travel, weekend and evening work is possible. Interested candidates should send a resume and letter of interest by September 15, 2008 to:
